A little bit of history…

Scotland’s capital city and home to 500,000 residents, Edinburgh is the starting point for our Mascarathon runners!

Nestled in the Scottish Midlothian, Edinburgh is one of the UK’s oldest cities, dating back as far as 1000AD, and home to lots of cultural heritage, Edinburgh Castle, the Fringe Festival, the Military Tattoo, the Scot Monument and of course, 4 fabulous Benefit Beauty Bars!

TV Presenter, Caroline Flack will be kicking off the Benefit Mascarathon, starting the first two miles at Castle Street at 11am on Friday 15th June, and we’d love you to come and cheer her on as we begin our 588 mile run to London! Running from Edinburgh…

TV personality Caroline Flack is heading up our campaign, she tells us why she’s chosen to be part of the Mascarathon…

I was thrilled to be asked to be an Ambassador for the Benefit and Refuge MASCARATHON.  With one woman in every four experiencing domestic violence at some point in her life, I hope the MASCARATHON  highlights this terrible statistic and in turn raises much needed funds for Refuge.  Please join me in supporting this invaluable initiative.”

Top 5 things to see and do in Edinburgh…

5.  Edinburgh Zoo

Just outside the city centre, this zoo is over 82 acres in size and home to the only Panda’s in the UK. It’s also celebrating its 100th birthday next year!

4. The Elephant House

A gourmet coffee shop, which was used as JK Rowling’s writing spot when writing the early Harry Potter books! It’s upstairs windows have a great view of the castle and they make a mean muffin!

3. The Scot Monument

A 61m high Victorian Gothic monument to author Sir Walter Scott, the spiral staircase leads to a viewing platform from where you can see across the whole of Edinburgh.

2. Jenners

An almost 200 year old department store, located on Princes Street, known as the ‘Harrods of the North’. The store houses many designer brands in its impressive building, the cornerstone of which is the Great Hall with its stained glass ceiling.

1.Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh’s most iconic landmark and home to the military tattoo, the castle sits on a ‘volcanic plug’ creating it’s imposing home above the city. The castle began being built in the 9th Century and is now used for a variety of events. Listen out for the One O’ Clock gun, first fired daily to symbol the time to ships in the nearby Firth of Forth, this is now a symbol of daily life in the city.
