Benefit’s collaboration with the charity Refuge, to support women and children affected by domestic violence, was launched with last#s years epic Mascarathon. So the time had come to run yet again for Refuge, at the Virgin London Marathon 2013.
We were grateful for the sun to be shining for our early start at Greenwich Park. The Benebabes and Refugebabes met the excited yet nervous runners to prepare and hype them up for the big event. Our own Beth Stonley, Benefit Cosmetics National Training Manager, was feeling a little anxious with a tender ankle injury, but as determined as ever to do her Benebest! After many hugs and shouts of encouragement, Beth was off to the starting point with the other 30,000 athletes ready to do their bit for charity.
And they were off, and so were the Benefit and Refuge crew, to our next stop Mile 13, to continue our cheering and support of the brave runners. With Refuge collection buckets and pink balloons at the ready, not to mention our 10m Refuge flag, we squashed into London transport and travelled to the Tower of London to find a good vantage point. With a quick sweet stop to stock up on ever important jellybabies and drinks, we wiggled our way through the crowd to find a spot to set up our cheering camp. Mile 13 proved to be too popular for us to squeeze in, so we opted for plan B, Mile 23, to set up out pink parade. The sun stayed with us as we jingled our Refuge collection buckets and shouted support to the determined runners. We spotted our gorgeous Beth as she came excitedly running with the crowds, arms outstretched, and looking elated and confident and well on pace for a personal best marathon time! After a jellybaby pit stop, she was off and racing again, and completed the Virgin London Marathon 2013 in an impressive 4hrs 32mins!
We then weaved our way to the Refuge Charity post-marathon party to find Beth enjoying a much-deserved massage. Too excited to wait to see her, we waltzed in to greet and congratulate her, as she proudly held up her Virgin London Marathon 2013 medal. Miraculously her they’re real mascara was still in tact, although she had decided that she would be naturally rosey enough than to opt for Benetint ;). After lots of hugs and kisses, and a huge carb feast (included a well-earned mudcake) as bid our Beneathlete farewell and let Beth enjoy an ice bath (not really my idea of fun) and so much needed rest and recuperation.
Beth raised a total of £3,563 for Refuge Charity and Benefit Cosmetics is honoured to supported such a worthwhile cause. A huge thank you to all who contributed or participated – what an inspirational feat!
Until next time,
