REFUGE, AND SEEING THE FUNNY SIDE
Over the past 11 years Funny Women has supported dozens of women’s charities and helped raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charitable causes. For 2013 we are delighted to be working with Refuge, a national domestic violence charity that is committed to a world where domestic violence is not tolerated, and where women and children can live in safety.
It might seem incongruous to use laughter as a tool to raise money for disadvantaged women and children, but over the years our experience has shown that the use of humour can be a powerful way to raise awareness around these often unspoken issues.
Funny Women Awards finalist Cerys Nelmes shares with us her experience of seeing the funny side in life, in the most adverse situations…
Comedy has been, and always will be, a big part of my life.
I have used humour to deal with difficult situations for as long as I can remember. Situations such as bullying, family bereavement, heartbreak, abusive relationships, giving birth, dealing with my dad’s cancer diagnosis – and sometimes the good stuff as well!
At school, I was never the prettiest or the slimmest but I always knew I was the funniest. So I obviously settled in to the class joker role. This got me out of various scrapes and situations, and throughout my school years my personality shone – and that was attractive to the opposite sex! I knew then, that no matter what happened in my life, my humour would always get me through.
Even in my darkest times I’ve always been able to see the funny side of things. Sometimes this gave me the strength I needed to get things back on track.
I’ve been a single parent for 12 years and my relationship with my 15 year old son is amazing. We have hilarious conversations and always end up in funny situations. He is very proud of me for getting on stage and performing stand-up comedy, at my age. He also unwittingly provides me with an awful lot of material to use in my stand-up routine!
So, always remember, comedy is the best medicine. Everyone loves to laugh.
Until next time,
