Festival season is nearly over. Are you ready to end it in style?
Summer is in full swing and while the weather isn’t always the most predictable in the UK, you can always count on a music festival to get you in the summer spirit! There seems to be one happening pretty much every weekend throughout June, July and August, so at Benefit we’re giving you the 101 on how to end the festival season in style, by rocking a grungy makeup look. Because let’s be honest; the flower-power, hippy festival look has had its time.
STEP 1: Primer
I cannot express strongly enough how important it is to use a primer when you’re creating your festival makeup look (or any makeup you want to last all day for that matter!). Conditions at music festivals aren’t usually ideal for making makeup last; it’s either scorching hot or pouring with rain, so you need all the help you can get! Enter Benefit’s POREfessional pearl primer. With all the same amazing benefits as the original POREfessional primer (oil-free, lightweight and reduces pores) it also helps to brighten the complexion and give skin a wide-awake look… great for when you’ve only had 2 hours sleep! Applying this primer will guarantee to keep your base locked down all day, even through the harshest of weather conditions and rowdiest of raves!
STEP 2: Brows
We all know that brows can make or break a great makeup look so it’s really important that you get them right for festival season, especially when the chances of you being featured on your friend’s Instagram stories are pretty high. My fave product, precisely, my brow pencil, is the perfect tool for creating amazing looking brows in under 5 minutes. The ultra-thin tip helps you draw natural hair strokes where needed, without looking fake or heavy. To go a step further and keep those bad boys in place all day use the 24-hour brow setter clear brow gel. It has an invisible finish, a strong but flexible hold and never flakes! The dual-sided wand is also great for creating a feathery finish as it coats hairs from root to tip.
STEP 3: Foundation
Now it’s time to move onto foundation, the hider of all sins! Seasoned festival goers will know that a full coverage, heavy foundation doesn’t always mix well with festival conditions, so we suggest using the BRAND NEW Hello Happy Flawless Brightening Foundation. It is a medium but buildable coverage, lightweight and natural, and contains photochromic pigments that instantly adapt to brighten skin in any lighting. It also gives your skin a healthy dose of hyaluronic acid to help maintain moisture levels all day long. Oh, and did we mention that it lasts for 12 hours? Apply with a foundation brush or sponge and blend until your heart’s content!
STEP 4: Concealer
Who needs sleep when you have concealer, am I right?! Save those tired looking under eyes with a healthy dose of Benefit’s boi-ing airbrush concealer to give an instant airbrushed look without the cakey-ness. The waterproof, 10-hour wear formula is a medium coverage and is your real-life retouch in a pot! Easy to apply and blend, this concealer is going to be your new bestie not just for festival season, but for life! For extra impact and definition, use the concealer to carve out your brows and blend well into your foundation.
STEP 5: Contouring
Want to fake chiselled cheekbones and hide a double chin? Me too girl, join the club! The hoola quickie contour stick is a great way to quickly and easily achieve this as the stick’s dome shape tip ensures a smooth, targeted application every time! The cream to powder formula also offers a natural, soft matte finish and is super long lasting. Apply to the hollows of your cheeks, top of your forehead, the sides of your nose and along the jawline and down the neck and blend with either a brush or sponge.
STEP 6: Cream Highlighting
Now you’ve contoured it’s only right that you highlight too! Apply Benefit’s high beam complexion highlighter to the areas that you want to be more pronounced; tops of the cheekbones, tip of the nose, cupid’s bow, under the brows and corner of the eyes. High beam is a fab option for a festival as it’s small (perfect for traveling light) and multipurpose. Use as described above or wear underneath makeup for subtle luminescence.
STEP 7: Bronzing
We all know that we can’t rely on the sun making an appearance during the summer in UK, so fake a sun-kissed look with the country’s number 1 best-selling bronzer; hoola. Now available in 4 shades, there’s a hoola out there for everyone! Apply to the same areas that you used the hoola stick to deepen and define the contour even further without looking muddy… like you’ve spent the weekend at Glasto! The box’o of hoola also comes with a built-in mirror and brush making it a perfect festival makeup kit addition!
STEP 8: Powder
A vital step that you can’t skip is powder. Even if you have dry skin you still need to set your face to give it the best chance of lasting all day. Use Benefit’s dr feelgood silky mattifying powder anywhere that you’ve applied concealer, and to your T-zone. This ultra-fine, silky, loose powder will instantly minimise shine and control oils for up to 12 hours without adding extra colour or weight to your face. Additionally, use dr feelgood to bake under your contour, with a damp sponge to further define and elongate your makeup.
STEP 9: Powder Highlighter
To intensify your highlighter even more and ensure you’re seen from the heavens, apply Tickle; a golden pink, super-silky highlighting powder from the Cheekleaders Pink Squad palette. Adding an extra layer of powder to your face will not only make your highlight more intense, but it will also help to keep the high beam product locked in for longer. As with the hoola bronzer, apply Tickle to everywhere you applied high beam.
STEP 10: Eyeliner
This is where you can start having some fun and experiment with your festival look! Eyeliner is such a versatile tool and can be used in many ways to give you different looks. For this grungy look we suggest applying the BRAND NEW BADgal BANG! blue liner along your top lash line and using the built-in smudger sponge to smoke it out. Be as crazy or as subdued with this step as you like! Wing it out or keep it small and neat, it’s totally up to you! But one things for sure, our new BADgal Bang! liners are a winner for festival season as they’re waterproof, smudge proof and intense in colour. One swipe of this highly pigmented liner will have you feeling like a bad gal in no time!
STEP 11: Mascara
Ready to add more drama and sass to this look? It’s BADgal BANG! Blue mascara time! Our brand-new mascara has exactly the same incredible formula as the original best seller with the bonus of it being electric blue! What better time to try out a coloured mascara than at a music festival?! The bright blue will make the whites of your eyes look brighter and whiter, giving you an amazing wide-eyed look. The 36 hour, volumizing formula is smudge-proof, flake-free and water-resistant… what more could you want from a mascara?!
STEP 12: Lips
Last but not least is lips! We recommend using punch pop! liquid lip colour in shade Mango. The smooth, non-sticky gloss glides on like a dream and contains vitamin E to help soften lips, perfect for a long summer day at a music festival! It’s available in 5 shades so you’re guaranteed to find one that you fancy!
If our grungy festival makeup look doesn’t take your fancy, try swopping out some of the products to create a glam, sleek look. Instead of BADgal BANG! Blue use Benefit’s they’re real! mascara to lengthen and volumise lashes to the fullest. Swop high beam for the watt’s up highlighting stick for a soft focus, lit from within glow. Replace 24-hour brow setter clear brow gel with gimme brow+ to fake thicker, fuller, healthier brows in seconds. And instead of punch pop! try they’re real! double the lip. This product is ideal for a festival as it’s a lipliner and lipstick in one that helps to define your lips, making them look full and luscious!
So, there we have it Benebabes, you’re all ready to go to the ball… or festival! We hope you can take some inspiration from our tips, and create an amazing festival makeup look that will look bomb and help you end the festival season in style!
