We’ve teamed up with our babes at The Hut, to speak all things brows, beauty, and Benefit with Senior Make Up and Trend Team Artist, Lauren Hogsden.
1: Benefit are the leaders when it comes to brow perfection, what is the one tip that you would give girls who are looking for perfect brows?
Don’t we all wish we could have perfect brows! Having the perfect brow is so subjective, trends and styles vary so much… Think about that overplucked 90s brow compared to the big bushy Cara Delevingne brows of today. At Benefit, whenever you come to a Benefit counter or store for a brow service or make over, our bene-babes on counter will brow map your brows, to ensure they are the perfect ratio for you face. This technique will help you see where you brows should start, arch in the centre and where the tail should end, lining up with the proportions of your eyes and nose.
Therefore, my advice is to never aim for a celebrity or influencers’ “perfect brow” as your face is unique to you, therefore your brows should be! So don’t feel pressure to conform to beauty trends or standards. After brow mapping, we can match you with the easiest and most effective products for you to achieve your brow goals!
2: What’s the most common question you get asked?
When working in industry, at events and on counter – I always get asked how to achieve the perfect cat eye flick for your eye shape. Which leads us onto the next question perfectly…
3: What products would you use to perfect a cat eye flick? Is there a science behind it?
A cat eye flick can be the hardest, most frustrating technique to master. For your classic, sharp cat eye flick I would always choose a liquid liner with a felt tip to create the perfect wing. Since, we released Roller Liner in January, I haven’t used any liquid eyeliner since. It has a fine precision tip, for easy application. The waterproof formula, is smudge proof, flake free as well as quick drying – so no need to worry about your liner duplicating on your eyelid during application.
Now you’ve got the perfect eyeliner, here are my top tips on how to achieve the classic cat eye flick:
Tip 1: For messier, more complicated eye looks, I do the look without having my base on, preparing the eyes, with eyeshadow primer on my lid. This means, if I need to press on a face or make any mess, I won’t ruin all the work I’ve previously done on the base. Also, a great concealer and brush is a perfect hack to help correct any eyeliner mishaps, which makes it easier to all blend together when you then apply the rest of your make up!
Tip 2: Always start at the flick. Line your roller liner pen with the side of your nose, through the end of your eye and make a mark for how long you want your flick to be. Then draw the top of your flick, the bottom of your flick then fill in the gap. Then you can begin to draw along the top of your lash line to complete the cat eye.
Tip 3: Look downwards into a hand hold mirror. It is easy to look straight on, into a mirror in front of you when applying eyeliner. I would always have a hand-held mirror on standby, so you can hold it below your chin to look down and check the lines, shapes and symmetry of the liner.
4: What eye shadows would you use to perfect the smokey eye?
We have just launched a brand new eyeshadow palette; ‘Big Beautiful Eyes’ palette. This is the perfect NUDE palette, it will suit any eye colour or skin tone, whatever shade you are! Furthermore, it is slim and compact so easy to take on the go. The palette contains a mixture of shimmers, satins, matte and even liner shadows so you can switch up your look.
When doing a smokey eye look, I always start with a matte, light transition shade in the crease. Rather than going STRAIGHT IN with a dark, shimmery shade. This will help you define a shape, then give you a base to blend your darker shadow into and on top of – so that your smokey eye is blended to PERFECTION.
5: What do you do to prep your skin to prep before makeup application?
I am skincare obsessed, at Benefit we have many unsung skincare heroes which I use on a daily basis. In the morning, I am always push for time so I like my weekday skin routine to be as quick and simple as possible. However, NEVER skip your skincare steps morning and night. In the morning, I prepare my face using cleanser, toner and moisturizer – basic but effective. In the morning, I avoid using an eye cream as an overly moist eye area can make mascaras and eye products transfer more throughout the day.
PRIME PRIME PRIME, since the launch POREfessional in 2010, I have not gone a day without using this primer. It smooths your skin, pores and makes make up last longer. But don’t take my word for it, Benefit does POREfessional in a mini size. So you can try before you buy the full size, or if you’re a girl on the go it’s perfect for your travel bag.
SPF is the most important part of your morning skincare routine! If you’re struggling to get SPF into your routine, use a foundation which already contains it. All our hello happy foundations contain sun protection factor, so that you’re always covered!
At night, I use an eye cream like It’s Potent, to prevent and reduce fine lines and brighten dark circles. Using an exfoliator like, Smooth It Off will also get rid of any dead skin build up to allow your brighten skin to shine through.
6: How long have you been at the company for? How did you get into the industry?
OH GOSH, I’ve been at Benefit for 11 years now! From an early age, I always had a passion for make-up, transformation and artistry. I left school, and studied at the London College of Beauty and from there my Benefit journey began!
7: What 3 benefit products would you not live without?
My top three products are Hoola, Gimme Brow+ and POREfessional!
8: Spots, what are your top tips to quickly get rid of spots and cover them in the interim?
Problem skin can really make you feel deflated, but I feel like we’ve all been there and who really has perfect skin? Whether it’s that time of the month, or you’ve just eaten badly over the weekend – there are ways to help treat problem skin. Try to never skip your skin care, morning or night. A make up wipe just won’t cut it! Ensure you remove your make up, then use a cleanser to get off the stubborn bits.
Washing your make up brushes and replacing any sponges you use regularly will help keep your skin clear. Even though it’s a chore, this will keep any dust or bacteria from getting into your skin and pores when you’re applying make up.
To cover up those blemishes, pick a fuller coverage concealer – even if you like to wear a light coverage foundation. A fuller coverage concealer will add vital coverage in areas you need, rather than all over the face. I would recommend Boi-ing Industrial Strength concealer. This is a full coverage, matte concealer which has a creamy consistency – meaning it is so easy to blend and build into the skin. As well as blemishes, it works for hiding dark circles so is an all-round go to product. I suggest working with your clean and cleansed fingertip and working into your base for best results. This technique is more hygienic than using a brush or a sponge. Furthermore, the warmth from your fingertip will help melt and blend the products together!
